What can you do as a parent?
- The first years of a child's life are important for language learning. Think beforehand about a language plan for your family:
- What does everyone feel comfortable with?
- Which languages are important to us?
- How well do we want our child to understand and speak different languages?
- Talk about your language plan with people around you who play an important role in your child's development.
- A positive attitude towards multilingualism is important for good multilingual development. Not only from parents but also from others around your child (family, childcare workers, teachers, ...).
- Also think about the future already. Which school language will you choose? How will you help your child with schoolwork?
- As a parent, do you want to take Dutch lessons yourself? Then visit het Huis van het Nederlands.
